Snowdrop Magic: Discover Herefordshire’s Winter Blooms 

With its nodding white flowers poking through the frosted soil of woodlands, verges, churchyards, and gardens, starting in January, you can spot these charming blooms. Here are some easy walking spots where you can see and even purchase these pretty bells at their best from mid-February, often with tea and cake available too. 

 
THE LASKETT GARDENS 
Much Birch 

The Laskett Garden will be open to pre-booked visitors on Saturday and Sunday, 15-16 February and 22-23 February, for Snowdrop Days. The awakening of spring brings a sense of purity and tranquillity to the gardens at Laskett. The snowdrops, hellebores, crocus, and iris offer a splash of early season colour, marking the magical beginning of the floral calendar. Visit for a creative stroll, view the stunning architecture, and take-home ideas to create your own winter jewel garden. The Café will be open too for tea, coffee, and cake. Booking required.

BURTON COURT 
Eardisland 

Mentioned in the Domesday Book, this homely manor remains family owned, accommodating weddings, events, antiques fayres and is used as a film location. The Simpsons welcome fascinating pre-booked tours of the house and grounds and you can even stay over in one of the three elegant bed and breakfast rooms. The snowdrops were early at Burton Court this year, so start your winter discovery today.

BROBURY HOUSE & GARDENS 
Bredwardine  

This privately owned riverside terraced garden is open 7 days a week, 12 months of the year. Easy pathways between water features and bold borders treat you to beautiful swathes of snowdrops and vibrant crocuses later in February. Additionally, the Walled Garden Café is open daily and offers a lovely spot to enjoy delicious tea and scones or a satisfying lunch. Learn more.

THE WEIR GARDENS 
Swainshill 

Located in Swainshill, this picturesque garden is a wonderful place to see a variety of snowdrops. The garden features different species, ranging from tiny bulbs to larger varieties. The Weir Garden’s serene setting along the River Wye makes it a perfect spot for a winter walk.

BROCKHAMPTON ESTATE
Near Bromyard 

This estate offers a mix of woodlands and orchards where snowdrops can be seen blooming. The estate’s historic manor house and surrounding landscape provide a charming backdrop for a snowdrop walk.

CROFT CASTLE
Mortimer Country 

Steeped in British history and politics, with a picturesque castle and medieval parkland re-fashioned during the 18th century, Croft Castle was fought over in the War of the Roses. Surrounded by 1,500 acres of woods, park, and farmland, take a waymarked walk to discover an abundance of nature, flora, and fauna at this special place.

BERRINGTON HALL
Near Leominster 

Georgian grandeur on a human scale, this neoclassical mansion by Henry Holland is set in ‘Capability’ Brown’s final landscape and gardens, with a beautiful boating lake. Take in the snowdrops as you go, of course.

MARDEN CHURCH
Near Hereford 

Open to visitors on dry Sundays during February, people are invited to enjoy this beautiful annual snowdrop display. Tea and cakes are available between 2pm and 4pm inside the church, and the Church Tower will be open, giving access to the museum and exhibition areas on the ground and first floors, and guided tours to the belfry and spire.

These two NGS Herefordshire gardens open especially on set weekends for you to enjoy their winter blooms. 

IVY CROFT 
Near Leominster 

The wonderfully flat 4 acres of this former cider house have both a country garden style and formal elements. Owner Roger Norman welcomes you for ‘Snowdrop Thursdays’ through February to see over 300 varieties of snowdrops throughout the grounds, with a great stock to purchase for your own garden.

WAINFIELD 
Peterstow 

On selected weekends in February and then beyond, these beautiful mature gardens with a pond and waterfall will be opening from 10am until 4pm for you to see the plethora of snowdrops and spring bulbs as they awaken. There will also be a plant stall at this opening.

DORMINGTON SNOWDROP WEEKEND

See the lovely drifts of snowdrops in the churchyard at St Peter’s Church and the gardens of Dormington House on Saturday 8 February.

The garden room at Dormington House hosts teas and homemake cakes (chargeable) and browse the lovely varieties of snowdrops to purchase, some of them rare, to plant at home. This is a regular charity fundraiser for the Church.
